Name the shore before the whole horizon
An island may be named for the first thing a sailor notices or the thing residents live with every day. Choose whose viewpoint matters: the harbor, an inland community, or someone approaching through fog.
Include the scale and climate in your brief. A tiny tidal island and a large inhabited island deserve different expectations even when both have beautiful shores.
What to look for
- Choose a coastline or weather detail.
- Read the name with harbor and island labels.
- Decide whether a local name differs from a map label.
Creative suggestions do not establish a real island’s historical or Indigenous name.

A question worth asking
How do I avoid giving every island a tropical feel?+
Describe a specific climate and daily life. Basalt cliffs, winter ferries, seabird colonies, or a working harbor create very different directions from palms and clear lagoons.
